The report of the complete sequence of the
genome of the E. coli K-12 strain in 1997
(Blattner et al., 1997) with a full map of the
4289 protein-coding genes of the 4 639 221-
base pair genome is presented here as an
example of one of many sequenced microorganism
genomes
