total of protein families

The total of protein families required for an organism
is called a proteome. Its study is called
proteomics. Since many genes are required to
encode the different proteins of a given metabolic
or signal pathway, genes of related functions
are grouped into families. Their number is
considerably smaller than the total number of
genes. The CAI (Codon Adaption Index) reflects
the preferred codon usage of an organism. (The
